Bird species are abundant in Bhutan with the country sharing its bio¬geographical zones with two realms; Palearctic and Indo-Malaya. Some of the bird species that are found in these two realms are pres¬ent in Bhutan. According to Birdlife International (2013), Bhutan lies in the range of ende-mic bird areas (EBA) of Eastern Himalayas and has 23 important birding areas (IBA) within the country. Today, most of these birding areas are intact and fall within the protected areas.

Bhutan at present is home to more than 700 varieties of bird spe¬cies. The rich avian diversity is due to country’s well conservation ac¬tion of forest and other components of watershed area that are guided by country’s developmental philosophy of Gross National Happiness.
