When the Tibetan saint and King songtsen Gampo undertook the building of 108 temples, according to prophesy, he selected the Ha valley as site for two of the temples. Today lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo stand as the guardian sentinels keeping watch at south entrance of Ha valley. Built in the 7th century, lhakhang nagpo with its distinctive grayish black wall is situated at a higher elevation.

According to a legend King Songtsen Gampo released a black and a white pigeon to select sites to build the temples. The white pigeon landed on the foothills of the mountain Chenrizi Avaloketesvara of the towering Rigsum. The black pigeon landed a little north of the white pigeon, indicating the per ordained site of the present Lhakhang Nagpo. The temple was named Nagpo as it was built on the site where the black pigeon landed,

Lhakhang Nagpo is a single storied temple built on a lake. An opening in the floor of the temple serves as the channel to the underground lake. Lhakhang Nagpo serves as the seat for the deity  Da Do Chen.

The main relics are the Choe- Lung-Tul sum, statues  of Jowo Maitreya, Guru Rinpoche and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. The Jowo statue is consider very sacred. Legend states that the place was once at the mercy of epidemic and famine. However due to the blessing of the Jowo statue the people were spared of death. It is said that the statue absorbed the vile elements and for this reason we see the chest of the statue dark in colour.

On a cliff, behind the lhakhang is a khilkhor(mandala) painted in gold. One can see only the golden color but cannot make out its design. Je Sherab Gyeltshen of Gorina monastery in Paro is probably the only person to have seen the Khilkhor with his naked eyes. The Khilkhor is against sun and rain by a cap-shaped stone.
